The imminent Pandora box for Indian casinos
31 January 2005
Indian gambling industry in California is facing one of the major crises due to its speedy proliferation under the very limited supervision of controlling bodies. Rep. George San Pablo Miller, D-Martinez was the one to make the federal legislation in San Pablo, initiating the urban gambling. Federal trusts have taken the former card room to give a green light for Indian tribes to establish a casino at one of the more amassed highway locations in the state.
Public has finally realized the extent of the casino related games and the impact it has made on the day-to-day life of many people, after the proposition to establish a 5,000 slot casino, backed by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger was made last year. Ultimately, the plan was handled by the lawmakers endowing the state and the federal government with more authority over the future secretive compacts.
One such compact introduced by Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., targets to revoke the careless legislation, made by Miller that has opened a Pandora box, as more and more tribes ventured to take advantage of the casino opportunity loopholes, which turned out to be the core of Indian gambling misdemeanor. Miller's amendment has marked a dangerous slippage for Indian Country and tribal-state rapport.
