Casinos refuse to provide money spent reports with minority businesses
4 February 2005
Casinos opposed the proposal by Mississippi Gaming Commission, made last year to file money spent records together with minority and women-owned businesses. Gambling firms have chosen to raise their contacts by providing sponsoring workshops, hiring diversified coordinators and doing other outreach efforts. Vendor reporting most likely would not become a requirement, though Sanders, the only black in the three-member Gaming Commission contrived to approve the proposal in September. Blackwell, the chairman preferred to linger a bit longer on the discussion rather then swooping onto its enaction.
Minority businesses are targeted by casino companies that seek to promote their successes. Last April, Caesars Entertainment hired Lee Renninger to take upon the diversity purchasing for its Mississippi properties. The target in purchases for 2004 with minority and women-owned companies in Mississippi was set to be nine million dollars which was about 10 percent of all purchases. The company's endeavors are not halted as currently they are bringing people together connecting other state businesses with minority investors to see if by teaming them they would actually be able to work as a group.
The chairman of the Minority Business Alliance, DeJonnette Grantham-King has summed it up by saying that teaming up with the right folks attracts the others to come on a board.
