American tribes are eyeing for Ohioan casinos
14 February 2005
Ohioan elected leaders were the ones to entice American Indian tribes into casino establishments by emphasizing the astonishing prospects of spin-off hotel, thriving commerce, new employment opportunities and tax coffers, brimming with tens of millions of dollars. American tribes, once nurtured by the Ohio's humble expanses wish to reclaim their ancestral lands for the luxury of having casino gambling. Three tribes have already popped the question of casino development as an option for the bruising statehouse politics and failed statewide votes that have prevented the Las-Vegas-style gambling in Ohio. United States is new to this tribal trial, as no tribe has dared to abandon its home land to open a casino elsewhere.
Experts say, however, that it is not an entirely impossible venture, but one that is likely to squeeze large amount of time, with no success guaranteed. Three tribes, the Eastern Shawnee, Wyandot and Ottawa, originated in Oklahoma have already made some initiations in their pursuits after the casinos in Ohio. They've said that they are ready to make claims to hand land in federal trusts and launch casinos under an agreement, or compact with Ohio's elected leaders. These compacts may potentially allow for casinos outside the tribe's ancestral lands, such as Cleveland, for instance.
Northern Ohio is planned to be a casino resort, with estimated proceeds of $1 billion, generating up to 3,000 jobs and $100 million in taxes which would go to the state, local government and schools. The tribes should, however, embrace patience as they face the traditional anti-gambling forces in Ohio, headed by the Gov. Bob Taft, who explicitly said he opposes any gambling expansion.
