Republicans are raising brows on the new Casino at Mall of America
18 February 2005
The proposition of casino at the Mall of America made by Gov, Tim Pawlenty's chief staff was privately heard last week. Pawelenty's adviser, Dan McElroy had a 45 minute meeting with the Nader Ghermezien, the developer about the plan of $1 billion mall deployment, the center of which is planned to be a casino. The reporters were ousted from the meeting but according to governor's spokesman, no promises were made and no commitments tied.
Currently, Indian tribes are the ones to operate all the casinos in Minnesota, when they get to keep all the revenues. Pawlenty's intentions are to create collaboration between the state and three northern Indian tribes to share profits from a new Twin Cities casino. The licensing fee of $200 million would be poised in the tribe's responsibilities, $100 million of which per year would have to go forward. The governor intends to create such partnership only in the communities that are bound to support this plan, but he assumes that quite a few of them would like to have it.
Republican Sen. Bill Belanger was dissatisfied from the casino negotiations which according to him were lead behind his back in the murky underground. Pawlenty's spokesman said in response that the governor has been open about his intention all along. Meanwhile, legislators from the Minneapolis suburb of Bloomington demand a local referendum prior to any mall casino developments.
