Pataki offers a new casino plan for tribes
21 February 2005
Gov. George Pataki has recently introduced a plan according to which as many as five casinos in the Catskills would be operated by the tribal representatives. Pataki's plan set forth expansion of Indian casinos in Ulster and Sullivan counties from three to five. The proposal was already backed by the Sullivan County Legislature, while Ulster County lawmakers, who've two years ago signed a compact with the Modoc tribe to allow a casino establishment in Wawarsing which was never enacted, have not yet reached a conclusive decision. The New Paltz Board members unequivocally polled against the proposal.
The Councilwoman, Kitty Brown said that she and her allies do not perceive casinos as a beneficial enterprise for their town, in any way. On the larger scale, she pointed out, if it does no good for their town, she does not want to be the one to dislodge it to any other town.
Scholarly studies have shown that counties with casinos exhibit higher rates of personal bankruptcy in comparison to their casino-free counterparts. Moreover, since Indian-run casinos are absolved from tax payments, they have little appreciation for the costs invested by the presence of the any gambling establishment.
