Casino gambling jeopardizes Chinese education
25 February 2005
The Chinese education authorities in Macau region have recently reported a sharp dropout rate in high schools with the growing number of casinos offering luring job opportunities. The last year record reveals that once four casinos published thousands of employment opportunities, hundreds of high school students abandoned their educational institutions in favor of casino jobs.
The numbers from education and youth affairs bureau outline the dipping in number of enrolled students in comparison to the last year, realized in decrease of 2,777 students. The director of the bureau, Sou Chio Fai accounted this drastic student fallout to the poor birth rates, where the teachers said that the diminished enrolment was effected by the enticing casino employment opportunities. They offer an easy and quick buck, which would be attained by unsophisticated measures. Government was one that assigned casinos to become city's economic backup.
As a result Macau government donated $53 million last year to provide free education to 56,008 students.
