Tribal casinos are barred by the Connecticut Governor
28 February 2005
Jodi Rell, the Connecticut Gov. stoutly balks the proliferation of tribal casinos in the state. She approached the congressional panel to look closely into the matter of Indian lobbying to include the recognition process.
Last year, the investigation of the lobbyist Jack Abramoff and the consultant of public relation took place, conducted by The Senate Indian Affairs Committee. The investigation encompassed issues that touched upon conviction of Indian tribes to make payments estimated in $80 million to lobby for launching casinos.
Last week, under closed doors a financial compliance was set between the Tiqua Tribe of Ysleta del Sur Pueblo in Texas and Greenberg Traurig, the leading Washington law firm, which Abramoff was working for. During this period he was apparently receiving money from the tribe to help in re-launching the casino he had already pledged the state to shut down. The new chairmen of the committee, Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz who has just undertaken a new post said he will hold more hearings on this scandalous matter.
Rell has contacted McCain last week saying that she thinks it is a must to deploy the investigation so that it'll encompass more general analysis of the problems associated with the entire federal tribal recognition process and the necessity for legislative reform.
