Pawlenty hits a casino deal with Indian tribes
5 March 2005
Tim Pawlenty is currently holding negotiations with three Indian tribes on the matter of casino legalization. Up to two metro-area casinos are prospected to rise receiving a proper licensing, tribes in exchange have to free the Legislature from authorizing any more casinos in the near future. The nine tribes of Minnesota would be given a restricted opportunity window to sign on no later than April 1 as part of the Indian side of collaboration with the state.
Pawlenty mentioned that he wants tribes to pay licensing fee to the state in $200 million and allow for revenue sharing, where about $114 million would be funneled annually to the state. There are at least four contenders for casino establishment, Anoka and other three communities.
The announcement of the state-tribe partnership by Pawlenty was drafted to come out in the few couple of days, but it will only mark the beginning of the battle in the Legislature and perhaps eventually the courts over the casino gambling deployment in Minnesota.
