Las Vegas casino giants are threatened by the lottery intrusion
6 March 2005
It sounds almost incredible that lottery, the lightest form of casino gambling was vetoed for about 150 years in Las Vegas and only lately the state received a proposal suggesting to remove the long existing ban from the Nevada Constitution.
Proponents of the casino lottery cling to advantageous aspects of the proposal that would create much needed money for the impoverished educational system that for a while has been exhibiting lowers finances and test scores. Casino opponents, on the contrary present arguments supporting the fact that with casinos and seemingly inflated revenues the gamut of social problems will top as well.
The allegedly innocuous lottery tickets, in fact are taken to be one of the more threatening devices in Nevada. The question that was raised in the debate was whether the state will do any good to its most prominent casino gambling industry by running additional gambling operations that may endanger its core line of business? Lesley Pittman, the spokeswoman for Station Casinos said the ridicule in Washington plunging into the airplane business or the state of Michigan swooping onto the auto industry, is rather similar to the ridicule in the lottery proposition.
