Tribal casinos - stricter oversight is a must
8 March 2005
Indian casinos must have a fortified supervision, since the industry is booming and the U.S. government should strive to prevent the once dominating style of mafia corruption that besieged Las Vegas. Indian casinos have generated a windfall of proceeds that surged from $200 million back in 1998 up to $18 billion found today, which asks for additional scrutiny. The chairman of the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs reported a few days ago that during his long career he has learnt that wherever money and gambling are involved, there is going to be the issue of corruption as well.
The lack of appropriate regulatory body and loose oversight on tribal casinos may lead to a blasting scandal. The history of Las Vegas provides ample evidence for concerns when looking at mafia-controlled casinos in the early days of its gambling deployment.
State casinos are monitored by more than 500 Nevada regulators, but Indian casino industry is supervised by only 40 agents. The Arizona Republican said that the federal government should impose stricter oversight at tribe’s projects to launch more casinos in urban areas. One of such projects intends to establish a casino that would neighbor with San Francisco, with 2,500 operating slot machines.
