Online Gambling Legislation Considered in 3 States
18 March 2005
In the wake of North Dakota's highly publicized online poker legislation, two additional states have received attention for considering online gambling bills of their own. In addition to North Dakota's online poker bill, Illinois and Georgia are considering bills that would allow online lottery play. The Georgia bill has already passed in the State House of Representatives and the Illinois bill awaits a Senate vote within the coming month.
These states see pro-gambling legislation as a means to gaining millions of dollars in added tax revenue, thus keeping tax increases at bay. State legislators remain convinced that the bills do not constitute a breach of federal law, and are prepared to defend this position in court.
A further boost for the pro-gambling camp, British legislators are allegedly considering allowing UK internet casinos to accept bets from U.S. wagers. Such a move would be a further slap in the face to American proponents of the illegality of online gambling who are trying to keep the already expansive reach of internet gambling from spreading any further.
