Compulsive Gambling in Oregon Affects More Women than Men
24 March 2005
An Oregon State Agency monitoring compulsive gambling declared that women have surpassed men in rates of gambling addiction. According to the survey, Oregon's compulsive gamblers number 32,000 women and 29,000 men. These results diverge from national statistics, which hold that men comprise two thirds of gambling addiction cases.
What makes Oregon different from the rest of the United States? Oregon is one of just five states in the whole country to permit lottery-sponsored gambling machines. These machines are believed to be more popular among women than actual casinos; machines lack the intimidation factor, which supposedly deters many women from casinos.
In Oregon, institutions possessing liquor licenses can install up to 6 video poker machines each. This means that gambling is readily available at bowling alleys, restaurants, bars and other locales across the state. In total, 2,000 retail establishments offer gambling machines. In addition to video gambling machines, Oregon also boasts nine tribal casinos.
While the majority of gamblers in Oregon do so recreationally, with no noticeably adverse side effects, the number of problem gamblers seeking treatment is on the rise. It is unclear whether this indicates an actual rise in incidence, or results from increased awareness regarding treatment options among the general population.
