MGM Mirage to Renege on the Theme for Next Casino Resort
12 April 2005
The Las Vegas Strip is famous for casinos disguised as castles, pyramids, jungles, faux metropolises and other fanciful creations. Well, the MGM Mirage is reportedly bringing a new gimmick to town- the themeless casino. MGM Mirage Inc. hired architect Cesar Pelli to build a 4,000-room hotel and casino, which he wants to see bereft of a theme. According to Pelli, themes draw attention away from the architecture itself. He wants to construct a complex that is all architecture, no fluff.
Initial plans feature two 60-story glass towers, lending the hotel casino complex a view spanning the strip and the desert that lies beyond. Among the resorts' planned offerings is a 150,000-square-foot casino, a theatre and between 15 and 20 restaurants. The new complex is expected to live up to four-star standards and to cost as much as $2.5 billion to build.
