Online Gambling on the Rise in Europe
19 April 2005
The Neilsen/NetRatings research company has released a new study showing that the number of online gamblers has increased by 45 per cent this year in the UK. Over 3 million UK internet users used online gaming sites in February alone.
Among the most visited sites are The National Lottery site, with over 1.3 million unique entries in February alone, William Hill, a sports betting site, and PartyPoker.com.
Nielson/NetRatings analysts expect to see an even greater rise in online gambling users as sites improve both the prizes and the selection of games.
They also theorize that part of the reason that online gambling is on the rise is the recent boom in hi-speed internet availability. 75 per cent of online gamblers in the UK use broadband connections, allowing them greater speed and comfort in their gambling.
In the rest of Europe, online gambling is also on the rise. Over 14 million Europeans, many French or Swedish, visited various online gaming sites in February. Spanish and Italians are apparently still wary of online gambling. Less than 10 per cent of them find their way into gaming sites each month.
