1 May 2005
There’s a lot of controversy surrounding internet gambling around the world. In China, though, there’s no controversy; it’s a crime, and it’s punishable by prison sentences and heavy fines. 46 online casino operators and staff were convicted of running online gambling sites and recruiting players for the sites. The sentences ran from six months probation up to three years in prison and fines from US$121 up to US$115,000.
One of the sites was connected to a land-based casino in Myanmar. According to the courts, there were millions of US dollars involved.
In a similar case in the Xuhui District, the owner of an IT company and three associates started a online gaming site which took bets on soccer games last April. The four were convicted by the courts and sentenced to prison terms ranging from 8 months to 2 years, and were given fines from US$2000 up to as much as US$36,000 each.
