Iowa Board to Approve Casinos; Hospital Counselors Predict Rise in Bankruptcies
7 May 2005
A May 11th meeting of the Racing and Gaming Commission is slated to determine the fates of ten different casino plans. With most members moving towards approving three to five of the plans, counselors at Allen Hospital in Waterloo, Iowa are concerned. Three of the plans under consideration are in the town of Waterloo. Researchers estimate that 1/4 of all bankruptcies in Iowa are filed by problem gamblers.
Counselors at Allen Hospital deal with those who realize that they have a gambling problem. Many gambling addicts are unaware of their problems. They see bankruptcy as a benevolent bail-out, but they don’t take responsibility for the actions that led them to the bankruptcy, and they continue gambling, still trying to win their jackpots. While state laws require casinos to provide funds to help gambling addicts, no concrete plans have been laid out, and the Allen Hospital is concerned that those most drawn to the casinos will be the people who can’t control their gambling habits.
