Scientific Games Sues GTech over Lottery Patent Infringement
12 May 2005
Scientific Games Royalty Corporation, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Scientific Games Corporation, recently filed a law suit against GTECH Corporation for alleged patent infringement. Scientific Games is a diverse company, owning a number of pari-mutuel establishments as well as providing lottery technologies to many state lotteries. They also sell pre-paid telephone cards.
Scientific Games claims that GTECH used technologies protected under US Patents number 6,648,753 and 6,692,354 in several games, including the Rhode Island Lottery’s Powerball Power Play. The system that GTECH used allows winning players to multiply their winnings based on a single bonus number. This system is used in many state lotteries, but royalties are paid to Scientific Games in recognition of their patent.
