US Bans on Gambling Ads Makes Online Casino Advertising a Tangled Web
15 May 2005
With the ban on advertising gambling in the United States, online casinos are struggling to break into the large US market. Many advertising agencies are therefore striving to find loopholes which will help them reach the gambling audience. Some advertisers, however, have decided to stay away from the complexities of advertising online gambling sites.
Some online casino sites, such as partypoker.com, have partner sites which are completely free with no option for pay gambling, and no mention of the other site on their main site. PartyGaming, for example, advertises its free site, PartyPoker.net, on national television, in the hopes that players who get to the partypoker.net will be able to find the partner play-for-cash site.
GoldenPalace.com struggles with new methods, such as having its name tattooed on boxers’ backs and making a series of bizarre purchases on EBay, in order to draw attention to the site.
With the online casino market at $9 billion and growing, advertising agencies will be looking for any loophole to advertise online casinos and poker rooms.
