Texas Casinos to Wait Until 2007, Louisiana Casino Owners Pleased
30 May 2005
Texan gamblers may be disappointed by the Texas legislature closing its session without allowing Texas to open casinos, or even launch video bingo and lottery. Owners of Louisiana’s casinos, however, are relieved. Louisiana Casinos are the primary destination of Texan gamblers.
The legislative session, which could have passed the bill allowing casinos in Texas, ends on Monday. As of yet, no ruling concerning legalizing casinos is expected, and only slight chances that video bingo terminals will be allowed are foreseeable.
Since the next regular session that can vote on casino bills will only be opened in 2007, Louisiana casino owners have little to fear in the meantime. On the other hand, Texas is ripe for casinos at this point, so Louisiana will need to work hard to keep Texan gamblers interested. Louisiana casinos hope that their state’s laws will work to keep casino taxes low, so that the casinos will be able to advertise and offer more specials. In addition, they are investing in improving properties to continue to attract out-of-state gamblers.
