Indiana’s Riverboat Casinos: Gaming Commission Agents Replace State Police
3 June 2005
Indiana’s shortage of state troopers has led to a new law to introduce gaming commission agents who will patrol riverboat casinos. The law will take the approximately 120 Indiana state police officers who currently supervise casinos off of the boats and back onto the streets.
The state’s gaming commission will get its own casino regulation force, which will serve the function currently served by state troopers on the riverboat casinos, but which will be specially trained for casino-specific issues.
State troopers are pleased with the new bill. Some of them harbor anti-gambling sentiments and were upset by being forced to oversee something they disagreed with so strongly. For some, working on riverboat casinos violated their religious beliefs. Others felt that their purpose in joining the police force was to ensure safety in the towns they serve, and that the casinos took them away from their real work.
Police department heads are pleased with the ruling, hoping that the 120 police officers who will be taken off of the riverboats will be able to supply much-needed manpower to Indiana’s police force.
