Kickapoo Casino Remains Only Casino in Texas
6 June 2005
The Kickapoo Traditional Tribe of Texas operates the only legal casino in Texas. Other Native American tribes have compacts with the state, which do not allow them to open casinos. The Kickapoo Casino opened in 1996, and opened a new facility in 2004. The casino employs about 450, and has about 1000 pull-tab slots. In addition, it has 20 blackjack tables and two poker rooms.
Like most casinos, the Kickapoo Lucky Eagle Casino hosts concerts, and they also host the Tejano Music Awards and boxing. With recent laws discussed which would have allowed video lottery machines at race tracks and the other two Texas reservations, the Kickapoo casino was at risk of losing its unique status. The tribe had hoped to pass through legislation that would designate the casino as a class III casino. Class III casinos are allowed to operate regular, independent slot machines, keno, craps, roulette, and off-track betting. Class III machines generate higher profits than the currently allowed class II machines. Kickapoo Tribe representatives might have preferred class III status, but they’re more than relieved to be the only class II operators in Texas.
