Norway to Close Doors on Gambling in International Online Casinos
12 June 2005
A majority of Norway’s parliament is in favor of a new bill which would prevent Norwegian citizens from legally gambling at offshore online casinos. While Norway has long held off on such a ruling because of economic agreements with the European Union, a recent court ruling from The Netherlands Supreme Court has made banning cross-border gambling easier.
Valgerd Svarstad Haugland, Norway’s Minister of Culture, said that the Dutch decision is good news for the Norwegian Storting (Parliament), and that he hopes the plans will be implemented soon. Critics say that illegalizing gambling in foreign online casinos is unrealistic and unenforceable.
