New York State's Catskills Casinos Plan Scaled Back
20 June 2005
After a Supreme Court ruling stating that American Indian tribes could not declare purchased land as a reservation, New York Governor George Pataki has revised the Catskill Region’s plan for casinos. Originally, the plan had included five tribal casinos, but the new plan scales back to a single casino operation.
Many cities have objected to casinos in their area. Saugerties and several other towns in the area objected to the plan to build at the Winston Farm, site of the 1994 Woodstock festival. Officials in Ulster County said that they would not allow casinos to be built in cities which objected to them.
Currently, it appears that the most likely site for the new casino would be near the Kutsher's Sports Academy near Monticello in Sullivan County. The latest plan seems more reasonable than the original plan supporting five casinos. Firstly, the roads and infrastructure of the area cannot support five casinos. In addition, with competition in both New Jersey and Connecticut, the region lacks the customers for five casinos.
