Oklahoma Casinos Expanding to Include New Games
23 June 2005
Oklahoma law changed last year to allow tribal casinos to offer poker, blackjack, and slots. Oklahoma’s Indian tribes are building extensions to accommodate the new games. Under the new compact, the state of Oklahoma will receive 10% of net winnings from card games, and 4-6% of electronic games such as slots and video poker. The state does not get a percentage of profits from bingo games or bingo machines.
Since January 2005, Oklahoma has collected $1.5 million from its 12 casinos, many of which have not yet added the new games.
Oklahoma’s tribal casinos hope to attract gamblers from nearby Texas where there are no casinos except the Kickapoo Lucky Eagle Casino in southern Texas. Texans say that Oklahoma’s casinos are a far cry from Las Vegas. They don’t offer craps or roulette, and most don’t serve alcohol. But that doesn’t stop them from frequenting the casinos.
