Ontario Casinos Will be Non-Smoking
24 June 2005
Detroit’s three casinos are probably very pleased with a no-smoking law recently passed in Ontario. Many Detroit residents drive across the border to Ontario for tax-free gambling, with many even driving right past the Detroit casinos. But the new Ontario law may change all of that. Ontario’s Minister of Health and Long-Term Care has released a report on the main impact of a smoking ban, which will ban smoking in all indoor public places, including casinos, bars, schools, sports venues, entertainment venues, offices, and even private clubs. The ban will take effect May 31, 2006.
The law, designed to save the Province of Ontario a significant amount of the $1.7 billion that tobacco-related illnesses cost the government each year, is causing concern among owners of Ontario casinos. A significant percentage of casino gamblers are smokers, and many come with friends. A single smoker in a group of friends might make the whole group avoid smoke-free casinos. Operators of Ontario’s casinos are concerned about the effects of the anti-smoking bill, but they aren’t panicking. Casino Windsor is building a new section which will include a 100,000-square-foot convention center, a 400-room hotel, and a new entertainment venue. The cost of the expansion is $400 million, and the expansion is expected to be completed in 2007.
