Mississippi’s Coast Casinos Hire Jamaican Workers
27 June 2005
Casinos on the coast of Mississippi are having a hard time finding locals to fill jobs, so they obtained authorization from the US Department of labor to hire foreign workers. Most of the workers come from Jamaica. They work in the United States for up to ten months a year, making much more than they would in their home country of Jamaica. The casinos are required by law to make a sincere effort to hire American citizens, and they will interview any American who wants to try out for the job. The jobs generally pay the state’s average hourly wage. American citizens are often reluctant to take the cleaning jobs.
One resort in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, had so much difficulty finding proper cleaning staff that hotel management had to clean the rooms. A human resources director from the resort directs operations for a company called Practical Employee Solutions which recruits and places foreign workers for casinos and hotels. The workers are generally pleased to find work in the United States. Many use the finances to pay for education for themselves and their children, while others save the money to purchase a home.
