Canada’s Federal Court Allows Canadian Casinos to Sell Cigarettes for Points
10 July 2005
In two of Canada’s casinos, the news is good. The Federal Court has decided to consider casinos’ reward points to be a monetary system. If the court hadn’t decided accordingly, the casinos would have had to stop offering cigarettes in their rewards plans. According to Canadian law, Canadian organizations may not give cigarettes to anyone of any age. Tobacco may only be furnished to consumers with “monetary considerations.”
Two Canadian casinos run a rewards program called the Players Advantage Club. Players can use points earned by the rewards program to buy a variety of goods, including cigarettes. Canada’s federal court said that the program did not promote tobacco or smoking, and that gamblers paid for the cigarettes with their points, which did have a real cash value.
One has to wonder at the casinos’ insistence, though. Of the two million club members, only 5000 chose to use their points for cigarettes.
