Proposal for Six New Michigan Casinos May be Denied
1 August 2005
Even though critics believe that the State of Michigan cannot support more casinos, plans to build six new casinos are in the works.
Revenues tend to shift when new casinos are built, and some believe that the casinos will not be able to grow substantially if they are taking revenues from one another. Many gamblers in Michigan also feel that there are enough casinos, and are satisfied with the way they are spread out.
There is opposition across the board, when it comes to building new casinos, as many locals, businesses and other casinos are in opposition. Indian casinos in Michigan have faced competition from commercial casinos in Detroit. These casinos realize that growth is not the same as it once was, due to the opening of these Detroit casinos.
Potawatomi Tribes including the Nottawaseppi Huron Band near Battle Creek, the Pokagon Band in New Buffalo, and the Match-E-Be-Nash-She-Wish Bank or Gun Lake Tribe in Allegan County, Southwestern Michigan, all want to receive permission for building these new casinos. They feel that the casinos will create new jobs, and funnel more money into the state.
A federal lawsuit has been financed by opposition group "23 is Enough" against the Gun Lake Tribe. They say that the casino is illegal, and that it poses an unfair competition for Grand Rapids businesses, due to its tax-free status. Court cases are also pending against two tribes stating that the environmental impact of these casinos will also be harsh.
