Report Shows Indiana Teens Visit Riverboat Casinos Often
5 August 2005
The minimum age for boarding Indiana Riverboat Casinos may be twenty one, but still, nearly three percent of students in one of the State's high schools admitted to researchers that they have bet money at casinos. The Indiana Prevention Resource Center at Indiana University released an annual survey, showing that high school students visit casinos often, with 4.4 percent of seniors stating that they have visited a casino at least once, and, more than one percent stating they visit casinos on a regular basis.
Nevertheless, the survey is not detailed enough about whether students gambled at Indiana riverboat casinos, casinos in other states, or at charity events that could have been considered to be casinos. Some are skeptical of the fact that so many teenagers were allowed into riverboat casinos as minors are usually denied access. Therefore, some believe that they could have visited alternative types of casinos, such as church casino nights.
Gambling research was introduced to the survey, which has been running for many years. Until the latest report, they survey has been used to measure tobacco, drug and alcohol use among teenagers. Due to the fact that gambling is spreading like wildfire throughout Indiana, researchers felt it was important to study the effects of this among teenagers, as well.
The impact of compulsive gambling among teens has also been measured, and it was shown that about five percent of teens felt guilt about the sum of money that they had bet, and nearly two percent wanted to quit, but could not. Nonetheless, it is difficult to determine the accuracy of these findings, as children do not necessarily interpret questions in the same way as adults would.
