Negotiations Over Super Casinos Spark Accusations against Blair and Jowell
8 August 2005
British Prime Minister Tony Blair, as well as Culture Secretary Tessa Jowell, have been accused of misleading MPs about talks that were held with American gambling magnates, regarding plans to construct major casinos in Britain. Some believe that Blair and Jowell secretly discussed relaxing money-laundering regulations for the casinos. However, both parties denied these accusations.
These claims were based on official documents, received under the Freedom of Information Act. The documents stated that officials from the Department of Culture, Media and Sport had entered talks to discuss easing European Union money laundering regulations in order to encourage American Casino operators to come and invest in Britain's forthcoming super casinos.
In reaction to opposition from within the government as well as from various social groups, the original plan to allow eight super-casinos was scaled down to just one. Nonetheless, more casinos may be permitted once the new Gambling Commission has examined the social impact that these extra casinos will have on people.
