Detroit Authorities Concerned About Delayed Construction of Casinos
10 August 2005
Three months have passed since sites were cleared for building new casinos in Detroit, and city authorities are eager to know why construction has not yet begun. A meeting has been scheduled by the Detroit city council with lawyers and members of staff from the mayor’s office, in order to discuss ways of hurrying the process.
Special emphasis will be placed on the smallest casino in Detroit, called Greektown Casino. This casino has not yet come to the city with any permanent casino plans, but approached the Michigan Gaming Control Board in order to obtain some type of financial clearance. The casino reportedly said that this is an effort to make progress in erecting a permanent casino infrastructure.
Detroit’s three casinos were planned to be built in 2002, but these plans were stalled due to a lawsuit challenging the casinos' license bidding. By April, construction of these casinos was permitted once again, but casinos had to redevelop, and update their plans.
Concerns have risen as to why construction of the casinos has not yet begun, but council members are confident that plans will be put into action very soon. Casinos need approval from the city and the gaming control board, before the plans can proceed.
