Ohio Senators Fight To Restrict Indian Casinos
15 August 2005
Two Ohio state senators, George Voinovich, R-Cleveland, and Mike DeWine, R-Cedarville oppose the expansion of casinos in Ohio, and are therefore supporting congressional efforts in Washington to stop the Eastern Band of Shawnee from launching casinos in Massillon, or any other location in Ohio. Both have offered their official support for legislation that could restrict Ohio Indian gaming.
Voinovich is one of the most vocal opponents of Indian Gaming and has lodged accusations at the Oklahoma-based Shawnee, claiming that the tribe blackmailed the state of Ohio, with the goal of receiving clearance for casinos in Ohio. However, Shawnee Chief Charles D. Enyart has denied these claims.
The Shawnee tribe has held discussions with many cities in the state, and Massillon is one of the locations in which they wish to build a casino. Other sites in which Shawnee wishes to construct casinos have not yet been revealed. No tribe has manged to receive rights to open casinos outside of their home state. However, the Shawnee tribe, based in Oklahoma, still continue to strive to construct casinos in Ohio.
