County Decision on Constructing of Casinos Delayed Indefinitely
20 August 2005
Plans to build a casino in Park City, Kansas, have reached a dead end, as Sedgwick County commissioners came to an agreement to put off voting on a casino referendum for an indefinite period of time. Two local legislators requested that a referendum be held in order to determine the number of people that actually support casinos in the county.
Five county commissioners felt that county residents needed to have a say, a chance to give their opinions on the construction of casinos. However a change of heart occurred when Rep. Brenda Landwehr, R-Wichita, as well as eight other legislators, decided that this was a state, and not county issue.
Wichita Mayor Carlos Mayans did not feel this issue was important enough to warrant spending the city's money, however many Wichita City council members felt residents needed to have a say in whether or not casinos should be built.
