Land-Based Casinos Could Be Authorized By Mississippi Legislators
1 September 2005
Mississippi Legislators could be swayed to change the current law that has kept its casinos on the water. The mass destruction of more than half of Mississippi's 13 casinos caused by Hurricane Katrina is the main factor leading legislators to consider authorizing land-based casinos.
At the moment, the law states that casinos in Mississippi must float either along the Gulf Coast or on the Mississippi River. Earlier this year, a state law announced that floating casinos were allowed to stabilize their barges with permanent pilings. However, none of these casinos managed to construct these pilings by the time Hurricane Katrina hit, giving them no chance at all of surviving the hurricane.
Previously, religious conservative lawmakers were against land-based casinos. Now, after the hurricane, this mindset may change. Many believe that had casinos been land-based from the beginning, there would have been far less destruction. In addition, rebuilding casinos on barges will be difficult, and it is believed that land-based casinos will boost tourism.
