Thai Gamblers Unable To Visit Casinos
8 September 2005
The restriction of Sa Kaew’s provincial administration of border passes to Poi Pet in Cambodia has left many Thais bitter, as they are now unable to visit casinos in the city. Thailand has no legal casinos, and, in the past, many Thais traveled to Poi Pet in order to gamble, but now they are unable to do so.
Not only Thai gamblers are affected by this ruling, but also traders from the side border who have contracts to supply food as well as other products to casinos. The Sa Kaew Chamber of Commerce has stated that thousands of Thais will be affected by this, as they works for casinos across the border, and are also being stripped of basic rights.
The head of the Chamber of Commerce believes everyone should have the right to do as they please with their money, as long as they don't break any laws. Thais understand that gambling is prohibited in their homeland, and always traveled through customs in order to play at casinos. Now that they are unable to do this, many may be drawn to visit illegal gambling dens at home.
