Barden Casinos Aid Hurricane Survivors
18 September 2005
Although Don H. Barden's property in Mississipi wasn't damaged by Hurricane Katrina, three casinos under his management are involved in the relief efforts for those who were. Barden, who is the president and CEO of Barden Companies, Inc. of Detroit, operates casinos in Indiana, Mississippi and Nevada, and owns Fitzgeralds in Blackhawk, Colorado.
The relief efforts include the Majestic Star Casino located in Gary, Indiana, which has teamed up with Northwest Indiana Casinos to offer sites that can be used for goods and money collections. Goods and money accrued through the effort will be donated to the American Red Cross. Collections commenced September 7th and will continue until September 20th.
Fitzgeralds Tunica of Mississippi accommodates homeless families and dispenses food and various goods to other shelters. It has also hosted a public blood drive.
Aside from providing meals and housing to New Orleans emergency service staff, who have been volunteering around the clock to help with the city's efforts to assist survivors, the Fitzgeralds Las Vegas site has partnered with Krispy Kreme to raise funds for the American Red Cross. Proceeds from September's Rockin' Ass Show will also be contributed to the effort, and the casino will sponsor the Clark County Leadership Forum/Katrina Relief Fundraiser and Silent Auction.
