Gulf Coast Casinos to be Rebuilt
21 September 2005
Operators of casinos in the Gulf Coast region, such as Harrah's Entertainment, Boyd Gaming Corp., Isle of Capri Casinos, Penn National Gaming, Pinnacle Entertainment and President Casinos, are reportedly planning to rebuild their ruined properties in Mississippi and Louisiana.
It appears that some of the casinos are already working on getting their employees back to work, although some have yet to be accounted for by their employers. Hot-lines and other means to contact them have been set up.
Haley Barbour, Mississippi's governor, suggested building temporary casinos in the interim, but casinos reported during a conference call that this might not be the most practical solution. Although the state has a timetable for restoring basic infrastructures on the Gulf Coast, including roads and bridges, observers still believe that it could possibly take two to five years before the region's economy is fully restored.
The governor is expected to hold a special session with the Mississippi Legislature in order to discuss rebuilding after Hurricane Katrina. Changing the state law to allow casinos to be placed on land, instead of only on water, will be a top priority. Several companies have already announced that should the Legislature agree to the change, they will rebuild casinos close to original sites, rather than further inland.
