Workers Fired from Gulf Coast Casinos
22 September 2005
While companies like Harrah's Entertainment and MGM Mirage have given employees of their hurricane-ravaged casinos three months pay and benefits following the disaster, former employees of the Copa Casino reported having received termination letters along with their final paycheck the day Hurricane Katrina reached the Gulf Coast.
A Copa Casino executive claimed that since the company isn't a big corporation, it has very limited funds, and that these funds are crucial if the company wants to return to normal business. In addition, the casino's debt payments are due shortly, and the casino will most likely not be able to use insurance money to cover them.
Treasure Bay Casino and Silver Slipper Casino, two other local casinos, are reported to have operated in a similar manner.
