Station Casinos' Construction Plans In South Reno Face Opposition
25 September 2005
A petition has been launched by a number of Reno residents against plans by Las Vegas-based Station Casinos, Inc. to construct a casino resort in South Reno. These residents feel that casinos in residential areas will increase the crime as well as traffic congestion.
The Culinary Union is assisting the residents in their petition, and has organized the “Citizens Against Casinos in Neighborhoods,” as well as the “No South Reno Casinos campaign.” Many of these residents feel that casinos in South Reno will enhance alcohol and drug abuse, as well as prostitution, which would have a negative impact on their children.
According to Bill Eadington an economics professor at the University of Nevada, casinos do not boost crime rates, and this resort will be the only one with a large casino in Washoe County as a result of the poor tourism market.
