Signatures Needed To Save Casinos in Tacoma
2 October 2005
Only a few months remain until the ban on mini-casinos in Tacoma, Washington, will take effect, yet casino workers are still trying to gather as many signatures as possible for a petition that could help them save their jobs. That is, if the outcome favors keeping casinos open.
The petition requests that permission be given for the four existing state-licensed mini-casinos to remain in operation after the first of January. This is the date set for the ban approved six years ago by the City Council.
It is too late now for this issue to be placed on November's ballot, and the earliest time it could be discussed is February. The City Council must take action with regards to banning these casinos; otherwise casinos will be closed down by the end of the year. Nobody is sure whether or not the state Gambling Commission will give permission for some casinos to remain open, but not to others.
Supporters of these mini-casinos have been working overtime to gather signatures, and have collected over 4,000 so far. Casino employees and their families are busy going to as many places as possible to get signatures from people who want casinos to remain open.
