Casinos May Be Beneficial for Kentucky
5 October 2005
Kentucky does not lack in faith-based groups, socially conservative lawmakers and top legislative leaders who are opposed to the legislation that may legalize casinos. On the other hand, many gambling proponents hope they will be able to find people who also support gambling, and know that casinos equal money.
The General Assembly is set to convene in January 2006 for a legislative session in which they will be faced with a $1 billion budget deficit. This means that the state will either have to raise taxes, or cut services. Gambling proponents feel that they will gain support at this time, due to the fact that casinos could generate up to $400 million a year in new state tax revenue.
State Sen. David Boswell has pushed for casinos for many years and has filed a gambling-related bill that will be considered in the 2006 legislative session. His bill would allow gambling properties to expand in nine sites around the state. An opposing bill has also been prepared that would limit casinos to horse racetracks.
