Navajo Nation Appoints Gaming Director For New Casino Projects
6 October 2005
The Navajo Nation Council has confirmed the appointment of the tribe's first gaming director, Edward Lockett Jr. The selection of a gaming director is a vital part of the Navajo Tribe's plans to construct casinos in Northern Arizona and New Mexico.
A feasibility study on casino locations has been conducted, and the study raised concerns that a casino at Leupp, Arizona, would be much too close to casinos situated south of Flagstaff. However, Leupp is still being considered as a potential location for the casino, and residents are generally supportive of the casino initiative.
Lockett's appointment will likely speed up casino construction, which is currently running behind scedule. Tribal officials hope that casino revenues will boost the Indian nation’s economy, and create more jobs.
