Casino Win Turns Displaced Hurricane Victim into Millionaire
8 October 2005
After a month of drifting from relative to relative following the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, displaced New Orleans resident Jacquelyn Sherman experienced a serious upturn of luck at a Louisiana casino.
Sherman and her sister were reportedly on their way to do a little shopping at Wal Mart, when they decided to stop in at the Evangeline Downs Racetrack & Casino in Lafayette, La. This detour via the casino ultimately made a difference of $1.6 million for a woman who, to put it lightly, had recently been down on her luck. Sherman's win marks the largest single jackpot won in the casino's history.
