Montana Casino Plans Delayed By Tribe
14 October 2005
The Chippewa Cree Indian Tribe is currently working with NORAM, a Florida-based casino building firm, to build a casino facility on the northern edge of its Rocky Boy's reservation, located in Montana. However, the tribe has had to scale back its plans to build the 30,000-square-foot casino and hotel, and the construction process will be delayed until next spring.
Originally, officials planned for the casino to open by January 1, 2006, having announced the project in July. The reason that the tribe has had to scale back the casino project is federal restrictions on American Indian gaming, which were proposed by lawmakers in September. The tribe will be traveling to Helena in order to try working out a gaming agreement that would exempt them from this restriction.
Fighting over new gaming restrictions may be done in court, but rulings would not likely take effect immediately. Tribe leaders wish to fight against these restrictions, and come up with a new agreement with the state so that they will be able to open the casino as soon as possible.
