Detroit's 5th Casino Plan Announced
22 October 2005
Plans to build a fifth major casino in Detroit have been announced, however Congressional approval must be obtained by the city and the Upper Peninsula tribe before any type of action can be taken with regards to building the casino. Plans for the casino were made public by the Hannahville Indian Community and Romulus Mayor Alan Lambert at a news conference yesterday.
Plans to build a casino and a racetrack have not been put into action since Detroit voters approved the idea two years ago. The tribe must receive congressional approval to build an off-reservation casino but this may be difficult due to the anti-gambling attitude that has grown in Washington, D.C. U.S. Representatives, such as John Dingell, D-Dearborn, and Mike Rogers, R-Brighton, have disagreed with the issue of the casino; Dingell supports the casino, while Rogers opposes it.
The Hannahville tribe, which is based near Escanaba, was one of four tribes that announced plans in June to seek governmental approval to open a casino resort in Romulus. The Detroit area currently has four casinos; MGM Grand Detroit, MotorCity and Greektown casinos are situated downtown, and Casino Windsor is just across the border in Canada.
