Opponents and Supporters of Monroe Casino Wait For Issue 11 Outcome
1 November 2005
Issue 11, a decision that will determine whether the Monroe, Ohio, government may enter into an intergovernmental agreement with East Shawnee tribe leaders to build a casino, will appear on Monroe ballots in November. Both opponents and supporters of a casino initiative in Monroe are waiting anxiously for the outcome.
Six council members have voted to allow this agreement. Some supporters of this agreement see the pact as a type of buffer, whether residents are for or against the casino. Casino opponents, on the other hand, feel that by voting no to this measure, they will be showing their opposition to the issue of gambling in Monroe, as well as their dissatisfaction with regards to the council's approval of the agreement.
The Shawnee Tribe will not build a casino in an area where there is no local support. The council's vote, which was 6-1, may serve as an indication that Monroe residents support the casino idea. Nonetheless, casino opponents are determined to have some type of influence on the vote and want to be heard.
