South Reno Plans For Casino
18 November 2005
Neighborhoods in South Reno could see the construction of casinos if a disputed development plan is approved by the Reno City Council. The proposal to build a casino at US $395 and the Mount Rose Highway has already been approved by the Reno City Planning Commission. Once the plan is approved by the City Council, the regional gaming commission will also have to approve the plan.
Station casinos, a Las Vegas-based company, would like to build a neighborhood casino at the Redfield Regional site. The company claims that the casino will create 1,300 jobs as well as millions of dollars for the economy.
The Progressive Leadership Alliance of Nevada has opposed the development of the casino, stating that it will detract gaming revenues from downtown Reno. The Culinary Union, also in opposition of a Casino, has created a website, nosouthrenocasino.org, in an attempt to get the community to oppose the casino.
