Florida Casino Ship Ads Raise Eyebrows
24 November 2005
“Visit Florida,” the state's tourism promotion agency, is currently advertising Sterling Casino Lines as one of the "Top Ten Unique Experiences in Florida." The agency is using the casino ship as a way of luring more tourists to sunny Florida. This advertisement boasts of the ship's four casino lounges and its large variety of table games and slot machines.
The promotion coincides with a special legislative session, called by Florida Governor Jeb Bush, which will attempt to oppose a voter-approved constitutional amendment that would bring slot machines to Broward County.
Bush, along with several other lawmakers, is very much against the expansion of gambling in Florida. The governor also believes that lottery games should be reduced to a minimum and that slots pose some type of danger. He has even banned charities from hosting bingo games.
Those in opposition to casinos are in a rage because thousands in tax payer dollars are going to this promotion, for a casino ship that will technically not even be floating in Florida. The casino ship will dock at Port Canaveral in Brevard County, Florida. However gambling will only take place over international waters.
