British Casino Sites Double In Number
25 November 2005
The British Gambling Commission may still be under the old regulatory regime, but the number of casinos in Britain continues to grow, and it is believed that there may be 211 casino sites even before new gaming licenses are granted under the Gambling Act. The number of British casino sites has jumped from 117 to 139 over the past four years and the number of casino license applications has nearly doubled this financial year to 39 applications.
Britain's largest casino group, Stanley Leisure, owns 41 sites, and has already had five casino applications approved by the new commission. Another two applications are still pending approval. Thistle Hotels, owned by Malaysian billionaire Quek Leng Chan, has also applied for casino licenses. The hotel group would like to build casinos in Victoria, Hyde Park and Marble Arch, all located in Central London.
