DeMint Denies He Was Bribed to Oppose Casino
26 November 2005
U.S. Senator Jim DeMint has been accused of opposing a Louisiana Indian tribe’s bid for a casino because of donations he received from associates of a lobbyist campaigning for a rival casino group. DeMint has denied such accusations, stating that he opposed the casino long before receiving the donations.
It is believed that these donations came from associates of lobbyist Jack Abramoff, who represents tribes trying to receive approval for casino licenses. Abramoff is currently being investigated by federal agencies on charges of bribery connected to his dealings with the tribes. DeMint has strongly denied that he was bribed by one casino to oppose another. The Senator is known to be against Indian casino gaming, and is adamant that the contributions in no way affected his actions.
Compared to many of the 33 lawmakers who took money from Abramoff and opposed the casino, DeMint faces minimal threat. While DeMint received donations about a year after signing a letter to oppose the casino, others received money only a few days later.
